Leeds United in ‘ongoing negotiations’ to sign World Cup star

Leeds United face an important few days as several first-team players approach the end of their contracts, while the club continues to push ahead with its summer transfer plans.

One of the first priorities after securing promotion was tying captain Ethan Ampadu down to a new long-term contract. The Welsh international signed a four-year extension, with chairman Paraag Marathe making it clear the club had no doubts about keeping one of their key leaders at Elland Road.

Leeds have already confirmed one major departure, with Illan Meslier leaving the club after not being offered a new contract. The French goalkeeper’s long spell at Elland Road has officially come to an end.

The Whites have, however, moved to retain experienced backup Alex Cairns, who has agreed a new deal to remain at the club.

Attention has now turned to the futures of the remaining out-of-contract players, particularly Karl Darlow and Sam Byram.

Darlow has been offered fresh terms by Leeds, but there is still no confirmation that he has accepted. Despite reported interest from Manchester United, there is growing confidence that the veteran goalkeeper will eventually sign a new contract.

Byram’s future appears far less certain. BBC Radio Leeds reporter Adam Pope recently suggested it would be a surprise if the defender remained at Elland Road beyond this summer.

With Darlow’s future unresolved, Leeds are actively exploring the goalkeeping market.

Reports from Italy claim the Whites are interested in Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who impressed during his first season in Serie A. Sportitalia journalist Gianluigi Longari says Leeds are monitoring the Japan international, while journalist Luca Cerchione reports that negotiations between Leeds and Parma are ongoing.

According to Cerchione, the coming days could prove crucial in determining whether a deal can be reached for the World Cup goalkeeper.

Leeds’ proactive approach reflects the uncertainty surrounding their goalkeeping department. Lucas Perri remains under contract and is expected to compete for the number-one spot, while Cairns is set to stay as backup.

However, if Darlow delays making a decision, Leeds could be forced to accelerate their pursuit of another goalkeeper to avoid disrupting their transfer plans.

The 49ers ownership group appears determined not to leave anything to chance, with recruitment continuing behind the scenes as Daniel Farke prepares his squad for life back in the Premier League.
