FIFA President Gianni Infantino has written to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) following Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with the contents of the letter now attracting widespread attention across the football world.
Lionel Scaloni’s side fell just short of retaining the World Cup after Spain produced a disciplined display to lift the trophy. However, the final was overshadowed by controversy both during and after the match.

Infantino also described the 2026 World Cup as an unforgettable celebration of football, filled with spectacular matches, emerging stars and unforgettable atmospheres inside packed stadiums.
Tapia Accepts Spain Were Better
While many Argentina supporters questioned some of the officiating decisions during the final, Claudio Tapia refused to blame the referee for the defeat.
The AFA president admitted Spain deserved to become world champions after producing the stronger performance on the night.
“We couldn’t beat Spain. They were superior, they won fair and square, and we have to acknowledge that,” Tapia said.
He also urged supporters to remember everything the current Argentina squad has achieved in recent years.
“In football you must also know how to accept defeat with the same dignity with which you celebrate victory. This group has given our country unforgettable moments and they continue to make Argentina proud.”

Although Infantino’s letter was intended as a message of congratulations, it has generated fresh discussion among football supporters.
