Wolves in line for €7.5m windfall as Bastien Meupiyou transfer race heats up
Wolverhampton Wanderers could be set for an unexpected financial boost just a year after Bastien Meupiyou left the club.
When the French defender joined Portuguese side Alverca last summer, Wolves negotiated a deal that allowed them to retain 50% of his economic rights. That decision is now looking increasingly valuable, with several clubs chasing the highly-rated 20-year-old.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Galatasaray have become the latest side to express interest in signing Meupiyou. However, Alverca are refusing to lower their demands and will only consider offers in the region of €15 million (£13m).
Should a club meet that valuation, Wolves would receive approximately €7.5 million (£6.5m) from the transfer thanks to the sell-on agreement included in last summer’s deal.
More clubs monitoring the defender
Galatasaray are not alone in the race for Meupiyou’s signature. Borussia Dortmund have previously been linked with a bid worth €12 million (£10.4m), with potential add-ons taking the total package to €17 million (£14.7m).
Napoli have also been credited with strong interest and are reportedly willing to match Alverca’s €15 million asking price, making the competition for the young defender increasingly intense.
Wolves set to benefit without lifting a finger
Meupiyou enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season with Alverca, making 32 appearances and playing a key role as the club secured its Primeira Liga status.
The defender’s reputation continues to grow thanks to his development at Nantes’ academy and his extensive experience with France’s youth national teams, where he has earned 20 caps. Alverca believe those credentials justify their firm valuation and could even see his price rise further.
For Wolves, the situation is ideal. Rather than negotiating a transfer themselves or considering the reported buyback clause, the Premier League club can simply watch events unfold. If any interested club agrees to Alverca’s valuation, Wolves will bank a significant transfer windfall that could strengthen their summer budget.
