Former Rangers striker and outspoken pundit Ally McCoist has launched a scathing assessment of Sunderland following their 4-2 pre-season defeat to Liverpool in Nashville.
The Black Cats showed moments of promise but ultimately came out second best against Andoni Iraola’s side, and McCoist did not hold back when analysing what he saw as deeper issues within the squad and the club.
McCoist’s Brutal Verdict
Speaking in a post-match interview, McCoist was typically forthright.
“I watched that game and I saw a team that still has a soft centre. When the pressure came on in the second half, too many Sunderland players went missing. That’s the mentality that will cost you in Europe.”
He continued:
“You cannot go into the Europa League with players who shrink when the intensity rises. Liverpool raised the tempo and Sunderland couldn’t live with it for long enough. That is a worrying sign.”
Lack Of Winning Mentality
McCoist pointed to what he believes is a missing ingredient in the current Sunderland squad.
“I’ve seen teams with less talent go further in Europe because they had the right mentality. Right now, I don’t see enough leaders on that pitch. When things get difficult, too many heads drop. That is not the mentality of a side that can win the Europa League.”
The former Scotland international was particularly critical of the team’s reaction after conceding.
“You go 2-1 up or level against a big side and you have to dig in. Instead, they gifted Liverpool the initiative again. That tells me something about the character in the dressing room.”
Questions Over The Board’s Ambition
McCoist also turned his attention to the wider club setup.
“It’s not just about the players. The board have to ask themselves if they are truly ready for the demands of European competition. Pre-season is the time when you see the standards. If the standards aren’t high enough in July, they won’t magically appear in September or October.”
He added:
“Winning the Europa League requires squad depth, a ruthless edge, and a group of players who refuse to accept defeat. From what I saw against Liverpool, Sunderland still have work to do in all three areas.”
A Reality Check
While careful not to completely write off the Black Cats, McCoist’s message was clear: the current group still lacks the hardened mentality required for a serious European challenge.
“I’m not saying they can’t improve. But on the evidence of that performance, they are a long way from being genuine contenders in the Europa League. Mentality wins you matches when quality is even. Right now, Sunderland’s mentality is not at the required level.”
The comments are likely to spark debate among Sunderland supporters, many of whom will feel the criticism is harsh for a pre-season friendly. Others may see McCoist’s words as a necessary reality check as the club prepares for the demands of both Premier League and European football.
