Leeds United Step Up Pursuit of Premier League Goalkeeper as Newcastle Open Door to Transfer

Leeds United could be forced to rethink their goalkeeping plans this summer amid uncertainty surrounding Karl Darlow’s future at Elland Road.

The Whites had been considering entering next season with their current goalkeeping group, but interest from Manchester United in Darlow has complicated matters. The experienced Welsh goalkeeper is out of contract, and the Red Devils are reportedly exploring a move for him on a free transfer.

As a result, Leeds may now intensify their search for a new goalkeeper, with long-term target Nick Pope emerging as a realistic option.

Leeds have already made contact with Pope’s representatives to explore the possibility of a move. Until now, Newcastle United’s position on the England international remained unclear, but that appears to have changed.

According to reports, Newcastle are prepared to listen to offers for Pope this summer. While they are not actively pushing him out of the club, they recognise that a departure could offer him a better opportunity to secure regular first-team football.

The Magpies are already planning for the future. Having strengthened their goalkeeping department, they are expected to pursue further additions once Pope’s situation is resolved.

For Leeds, the timing could be crucial. Lucas Perri has yet to fully establish himself since arriving at the club, and losing Darlow would leave a significant gap in the squad.

The club would have preferred to keep Darlow and potentially replace Perri if required, but Manchester United’s interest may force a change of strategy. If Darlow decides against extending his stay, Leeds are likely to accelerate their efforts to bring Pope to Elland Road.

With Newcastle now open to negotiations, Leeds have a genuine opportunity to secure one of their top goalkeeping targets before the new season begins.
